Coupled Marchenko equations for electromagnetic Green’s function retrieval and imaging

چکیده

Recently a new theory has been developed to retrieve a wavefield generated by a source on the surface and recorded at a point in the subsurface without the need for a receiver at that subsurface location. The scheme is presented for threedimensional wavefields. It decomposes the electromagnetic field in upand downgoing electric fields and in TEand TMmodes. Each mode can be treated separately to construct the Green’s function. We derive two coupled Marchenko equations from which the upand downgoing Green’s functions can be obtained. These two directional Green’s functions have applications in true-amplitude subsurface imaging without effects from internal multiple reflections.

Strategies for imaging with Marchenko-retrieved Green’s functions

Recent papers show that imaging with the retrieved Green’s function constructed by the Marchenko equations, called Marchenko imaging, reduces the artifacts from internal and free-surface multiples compared to standard imaging techniques. Even though the artifacts are reduced, they can still be present in the image, depending on the imaging condition used. We show that when imaging with the upan...

Source-receiver Marchenko redatuming: Obtaining virtual receivers and virtual sources in the subsurface

By solving the Marchenko equations, one can retrieve the Green’s function (Marchenko Green’s function) between a virtual receiver in the subsurface and points at the surface (no physical receiver is required at the virtual location). We extend the idea behind these equations to retrieve the Green’s function between any two points in the subsurface, i.e., between a virtual source and a virtual r...

Incorporating free-surface multiples in Marchenko imaging

Imagine placing a receiver at any location in the Earth and recording the response at that location to sources on the surface. In such a world, we could place receivers around our reservoir to better image the reservoir and understand its properties. Realistically, this is not a feasible approach for understanding the subsurface. Here, we present an alternative and realizable approach to obtain...

AN INVERSE SCATTERING APPROACH TO IMAGING USING MARCHENKO EQUATIONS IN THE PRESENCE OF A FREE SURFACE by

The Green’s function is the impulse response of a system and is used to infer the properties of the system from surface measurements. In exploration seismology, imaging algorithms use estimates of the Green’s functions along with surface measurements to image the subsurface, i.e. locate the Earth’s interfaces and its properties, so as to identify valuable energy resources. These conventional im...
